Volunteer Associations of all kinds flourished across North America. Albert C. Stevens in his Cyclopaedia of Fraternities reported more than 350 fraternal associations were operating in North America by 1907 or 40% of the male population over the age of twenty one. Essentially this is what Canadians were absorbed in and read Temperance Literature during the period around Confederation. Their lives were as rich as our own or equally unsettled by the problems of the day.
Some of the Fraternities in Lennox & Addington included:
Ancient Order of United Workmen A.O.U.W., Canadian Order of Chosen Friends, Canadian Order of Foresters, Independent Order of Foresters I.O.F.,
Independent Order of Odd Fellows I.O.O.F., Royal Templars Napanee Council No.295, Ladies Orange Benevolent Association L.O.B.A., Loyal Orange Lodge L.O.L., Mechanics Institutes, Patrons of Industry, Prentice Boys, Protestant Protective Association P.P.A., The Order of The Sons of Temperance S.O.T., and the Working Men’s Temperance Association.
